VANCOMYCIN
Description
Vancomycin is an antibiotic used only in hospitals and only for patients who are closely monitored because of the high risk of adverse effects. The drug is indicated in severe, life-threatening infections caused by staphylococci and other Gram-positive bacteria that can not be treated with conventional antibiotics such as penicillins, cephalosporins (due to resistance or intolerance).
The drug is especially used in cases of methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus in patients with cerebral abscess, meningitis, peritonitis due to continuous peritoneal dialysis and sepsis.
The drug is used alone or in combination with other antibiotics such as aminosid for the prevention and treatment of endocarditis, prevention of surgical infections and in treatment and intensive care for patients with immunodeficiency.
